Stanley Rother was born into a family of hard-working Oklahoma farmers. In 1968, five years into his priesthood, Fr. Rother requested reassignment to a mission in rural Guatemala. There he served the poor, translated Scripture, and provided education programs via radio. But across Guatemala during that time, Catholics were being killed amidst a civil war. Fr. Rother knew the risks, but believed deeply that “the shepherd cannot run.” On the night of July 28, 1981, men snuck into his home and shot the holy priest.
