Louise de Marillac was born into a wealthy French family in 1591. Though she pondered religious life, Louise married, had a son, and lived a happy life. Widowed after 12 years of marriage, Louise revisited the idea of becoming a nun. With her friend, Saint Vincent de Paul, she founded the Daughters of Charity, establishing convents, hospitals, schools and orphanages all over France; serving the poor as if serving Christ himself.
